The material
What biochar is
Biochar is charcoal made on purpose for use in soil and other materials rather than for fuel. It is produced by heating wood or plant material with very little oxygen, a process called pyrolysis. What remains is mostly carbon, in a form that resists decay for a very long time.
What it does in soil
Biochar is porous. A handful has an internal surface area far larger than the same handful of soil, so it holds water, air, and nutrients where roots and soil life can reach them. Over time it can improve water retention in sandy soils, drainage in heavy soils, and the habitat available to soil microbes.
It is not a fertilizer. It holds and moderates what is already in the soil or what you add to it. That is why biochar works best when it is charged with compost, manure, or a liquid feed before it goes in the ground.
Benefits by use
Soil amendment
Improves water holding, nutrient exchange, and structure in many soils. Effects are gradual and are strongest on poor, sandy, compacted, or degraded ground. Rich loam sees less difference.
Potting and nursery mix
Replaces a portion of perlite or peat, adds porosity, and buffers moisture swings in containers. Typical inclusion is 10 to 20 percent by volume, blended before planting.
Compost blending
Added as a pile is built, biochar can reduce odor and nitrogen loss and absorb leachate. The finished compost comes out with the biochar already charged, which is the easiest way to prepare it for the field.
Animal bedding and feed
In bedding, biochar absorbs moisture and ammonia, and the used bedding is a good compost feedstock. Feed use is governed by rules we do not set. We will tell you what documentation we hold for a batch; the decision to feed it belongs with you and your veterinarian or nutritionist.
Water filtration
Coarse biochar can filter sediment and some dissolved contaminants in stormwater and agricultural runoff. Performance depends on particle size, contact time, and what you are trying to remove. It is one component of a designed system, not a drop-in fix.
Construction materials
Biochar is being trialed as a lightweight, carbon-storing additive in plasters, concrete, and asphalt. This is an active area. We can supply material and analysis for trials and will be plain about what is not yet known.
Carbon removal
The carbon in biochar came out of the air by way of plants, and most of it stays put for centuries once the biochar is in soil. That makes it one of the more straightforward ways to store carbon. We track the mass and the analysis of what we produce so that any claim can be checked against a record.
Honest limits
It is not a fertilizer
Fresh biochar carries few nutrients, and uncharged biochar added to soil can tie up nitrogen for the first season. Blend it with compost, manure, or a liquid feed first, or expect a slow start.
It raises pH
Most wood biochar is alkaline. That helps acidic soils and can hurt plants that want acid conditions. Test your soil before applying at rate.
Results take time
One season rarely shows much. Gains in water holding and structure build over several years. Plan a test strip and keep a control.
Not all biochar is the same
Feedstock, temperature, and particle size change the product. Ask for the batch record and use the right grade for the job.
It is dusty when dry
Wear a mask when handling dry fines. We ship most material lightly moistened for that reason, and we will tell you the moisture of what you receive.
It is not a substitute for good practice
Biochar helps soil do its work. It does not replace cover crops, rotation, organic matter, or drainage. Treat it as one tool in that set.
How to use it
The rates below are typical starting points, not prescriptions. Start smaller than you think, keep a control strip, and measure.
